Analysis: Some have mentioned that people need to be made aware of some political issues. What specifically?

Just so I can let you know, I think people should be "made aware of" the fact that in about an hour the POLY Squad organized a successful two-week campaign to help people in New Orleans. Not only was the plan created on what I like to call a Campaign Map (calendar), but it was carried out, as written, at each stage. A variety of teachers and a multitude of students were engaged in charitable giving and service learning opportunities. There was authentic learning taking place at various stages and areas. The concrete goal of filling the semi trailer was achieved. As a direct result of the POLY Squad's efforts, over 84 boxes from Muskego were filled with helpful supplies which included over 156 formal dresses.

I think it's very important that the rest of the students at MHS are aware of the issues that are going to come up in the '08 election, as well as the election itself. Everybody is getting closer to the age where they can vote, and if they understand the politics of an election before they can, it can make their vote much more effective. Making them aware of the upcoming election could be a great way to convince people to participate in other ways until, and hopefully after, they are 18.

Since I again am ahead of the curve and have briefly answered both of the questions posed last week and we don’t have another yet, I’ll again make Mr. Bretzmann’s job for the week easy, and add another question:

Opinion: Many people who appear to have a majority of the Poly Squad / Political Science Club have mentioned that they would like to “just sit around and talk politics,” so this seems to beg the question what issue should the club talk about?

I believe that we should have discussions surrounding the actions and political positions taken by the 2008 candidates. By discussing thing like: Is Rudy conservative enough to even win over some far right wingers? Was Hillary’s visit to Selma an attempt to show up Obama and did it work? Can Bill carry Hillary with the African-American community? How will the fact that Romney is Mormon affect how he is viewed as a candidate? Will the fact that Obama was a smoker affect how he is viewed by the public? Is McCain’s age and possibly his health an issue? How large of a role will race and gender play in the Democratic Party nomination? Would Hispanics go the ballot boxes in larger numbers if they had a Hispanic candidate to vote for and will this at all affect Richardson? Will the fact that super Tueseday will be even more “super” affect the outcome of the primaries? Will any specific state’s movement of their primary greatly affect the entire primary process? Are there major issues that should arise that have not, or are purposely being ignored? Should the Club organize any field trips or extra-cricular outings / swarees to see major political figures / candidates speak? How is the foreign media covering the events leading up to the primaries?

I definately think that people should be made aware of political issues especially those that are surrounding the 2008 election because that will be a crucial period in our life. I know many people believe that they can't influence politics, but they really can and they need to be aware of that. I agree with Trevor that I don't think people need to be aware of one specific issue but rather need to be more educated about politics and realize how important it is in our society and how much they can have an impact.
