vs. Immigration. In 1965 he passed the Immigration and Nationality act of 1965. This restricted immigration to 170,00 per year from the country of origin. The law also notably banned the immigration of homosexuals going along with the previous INS ban on immigration of "sexual deviants."

Lyndon Johnson's legacy should be the Vietnam War. LBJ received a boost to his legacy due to Nixon's Treason, the "WaterGate" scandal. LBJ knew about Nixons lies and planned sabotage. Nixon blocked peace talks during the Vietnam war, without this "cover up"
lie over 20,000 U.S. soldiers could have been living.

Space. Lydon B. Johnson's legacy should rightfully be how he essentially created the space race, prompted and nutured the NASA program, and then ended it within a decade time span. LBJ forced the space race unto President Eisenhower, and kept up the pressure until the first successful launch (Which was a spy satellite and captured images of Soviet Russia better than most U--2 planes.). He then was put in charge of overseeing NASA during his vice presidency, and then was president during the moon landing. Without him, NASA might not be as successful as it was, and all the technology that propelled the past into the future we see today might not have been possible.

vs Racial Immigration. He passed a huge act preventing a great amount of immigration into the country.

I believe his legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It is one of our countries biggest turning points by ending discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

LBJ's civil rights Act of 1964 should be his legacy because of how important it was for the minorities. It was a pivotalable turning point in the racism and discrimination.

Immigration. In 1965 he passed a huge act preventing a lot of immigration into the country. But i believe his legacy should be the civil rights act. It was the turning point of our country ending race discrimination and religion.

I think his legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was one of the most important people in the Civil Rights Movement. He was the first president to do this much for Civil Rights since Lincoln. This changed our country forever because it banned segregation from the workplace which was huge.

During Lyndon B. Johnson's administration, many legislative and national achievements were made. The most important and powerful was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law had finally paved the path for change in how people treated minorities and different ethnic groups and women. His signature on the bill (with his many pens) had started a long-awaited revolution that turned our country toward the right direction.

The Civil Rights act of 1964, because without LBJ's ideas, and the way he carried out getting the act passed may have never been achieved by another president, and without this act racism would still remain very high in the United States today.

Civil rights Act of 1964 the signing of the Civil Rights Act is considered the nation’s most important civil rights legislation it eliminated discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

I think that he should be remembered most for the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It has to be one of the most significant acts in our country's history as it protected people from racial discrimination, which was prominent in the U.S at the time.

LBJ's legacy should be involved with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Without Lyndons ideas and progress with the act the US would not be the same. He paved the way how people treat minorities, different ethnic groups, and women. His contributions turned the country in the right direction.

Lydon B. Johnson's legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was one of our countries biggest breakthroughs in racial, sexual, and religion based segregation in the United States. The United States today is an entirely new place today due the Civil Rights act.

Civil Rights Act of 1964 becuase LBJ was a huge part of the Civil Rights era as well as the overall movement, being president, he did much for civil rights. Segregation in schools was banned and also in the workplace which helped America advance.

Civil Rights Act of 1964. Besides ending various forms of discrimination, it changed the way we view the world (and each other) today. It also is a gateway of sorts, leading the way for other similar movements.

I think LBJ's legacy should be the Vietnam War. The war impacted the American severely, and that is when we started seeing the most rioting against going over seas.

I think that LBJ's legacy should not be restricted to just one item. The civil rights laws, the Great Society, and Vietnam are all extremely significant events in our nation's history that all occurred under LBJ. To single one out as LBJ's legacy is impossible because all are of such great importance. Johnson's presidency had much legislative success, but failure as commander in chief. To remember him we must remember both sides of his presidency.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it was the biggest legacy that had to do with those primarily in our country. Immigration and the Vietnam War were large steps involving the rest of the world, but on an 'at home' basis, the gateway for equal rights in all races in the United States involved this legislation on a large part.

Unknown said...

vs. Immigration. He passed the Immigration and Nationality act in 1965. This act helped preventing much of the immigration in the United States.

Why not both? A legacy does not need to be limited to one thing. Can he not be remembered for both? It is wrong to say that a certain thing he did was "better" or more impact. These two things combined can over impact a HUGE amount of people. Civil rights impacts the entire minority population while the Vietnam war, countless others. Remember him for both, not for one or the other.

I believe that LBJs legacy is the civil rights act of 1964 because it acted on the several forms of discrimination. It changed a lot for our world and try to reach toward the goal of peace. He should also be recognized for immigration.

Unknown said...

I think he should be remebered most for the civil rights act because people are still fighting for their rights today. It has made such an impact and it continues to do so.

The Great Society. Although Johnson was a conservative voter in the Senate, he established a liberal outlook towards the presidency. He wanted to wage a "war on poverty," and attempted this in ways such as signing the Economic Opportunitiy Act of 1964, which made the Office of Economic Opportunity and established the Job Corps. Although much of the funding he wanted to use for this went to Vietnam, it was still something he strongly believed in.

vs. Immigration, because he passed an act in 1965 which prevented many from immigrating into the country.

Civil rights act of 1964, because if this would have never been created our country may still be severely effected by racial issues causing our congress to be spending time on this today instead of other important issues.

He passed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 both in 1965. He also also made the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which really helped move our country. Also the Vietnam War he made a big move showing how Nixon was lying. Overall i think that the Civil Right Act is where he should be remembered.

I believe LBJ's legacy should be the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is what started the end to racism and segregation in our country and I believe this was one of our highest points for the country as a whole.

His legacy should be forming the civil rights act of 1964 because it had a huge impact and movement in our country. The Vietnam war was just as large of an impact on the country as the civil rights act of 1964

Unknown said...

Definitely the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Though the Vietnam War impacted our country greatly, our country likes to focus more heavily on the negative impact someone makes rather than the positives. The Civil Rights Act impacted everyone in this country, whether colored or white. Though immigrants were more directly affected by this act, everyone was discriminated against in some way for their race, religion, sex, or national origin.

LBJ's legacy should be in his work with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The equality of people in our country is important and he had integral role to play in the making of the act that pushed our nation toward equality.

LBJ's legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was such a huge turning point for our country as a whole, as it put an end to discrimination. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was very important to minoriies everywhere in the United States.

vs. A Great Society. Including the Medicare amendment to the Social Security Act, LBJ's agenda was for improving American life in a variety of ways. While much of the funding for the programs with Johnson's Great Society was swallowed by the Vietnamese war, it is important to note that this would have been the largest reform effort since FDR's New Deal. This effort resulted in a drop in the percentage of Americans living under the poverty line from about 20 to 12 percent.
Also garnering significance was the manner in which governmental aid was viewed: not as a hand out, but a hand up. Leveling the field through programs such as Head Start which continues to this day.
While it is possible to say that the Vietnam War is hugely significant, it is also possible to say such an event would mark any presidency. Therefore, I propose that LBJ's legacy should be more closely rooted in the actions he took in the United States.

I believe his legacy should be the civil rights act of 1964. After all after hearing "Civil Rights" and the year 1964 or the era of it. what american does not know what this relates to just by breaking down its name.

He has a legacy that many people may not even know about. He is one of four presidents to serve as a representative, senator, vice president, and president. On top of this, he filled the shoes of a truly inspiring president in John F. Kennedy who brought great hope to the American people.

Anonymous said...

@JonathanAiuppa do you think that LBJ's legacy is the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Or just that the Act has a legacy of its own? Because when I first heard of the Act, I learned of the Act and its importance, not of the person who created it.

vs. Immigration because he passes an act that put a limit on how many people can immigrate to the
United States. However I think that his legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because that changed our country forever. Now people of all ethnicities, cultures, and religions can be at the same place and intermingle. They are able to sit at the same booth and drink form the same bubbler because of this act.

What I believe most people know President Johnson was the vice President that took office after JFK's assassination. He served in the Navy, then he was elected into the Senate. When the Democrats had control of the Senate he became the majority leader, then running mates with JFK.

Unknown said...

I think LBJ's legacy should be in all of the legislation he passed and not in the Vietnam war. The changes he made helped protect the nation's land, air, water, wilderness, and quality of life while keeping people safe. These changes still effect America today.

Unknown said...

I would say the Civil Rights Act of 1964 due to its significant impact on the United States overall. This act and its regulations served as a major turning point for America, as it set the venture for true equality in motion. Without it, we may not be continuing to strive for further equality today. A legacy is something that lives on. LBJ's Civil Rights Act of 1964 proves to do so.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/03/07/employers-add-175000-jobs-in-february-unemployment-rate-rises-to-67-percent/

According to recent numbers, more people gained jobs in February than in any other month in the last 5 years. Still, unemployment rates went up to 6.7% at the end of the month, not a huge change but one that is continues to scare American people. What can government officials do to ensure that the employment rate drops instead of increases?

Lyndon Johnson's legacy should be the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it was a huge milestone for the minorities to finally stop being discriminated against.

I believe President Johnson's legacy should definitely be the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act gave people of all color, race, sex, religion, and nationality the chance to be free of discrimination. Because of the act, America is much different today than it was in the years preceding the act.
