This article describes the reasons that Congress may try and legalize marijuana. This reveals the marble cake view of the current state of cooperative federalism. Although the constitution does not explicitly state that the federal government should regulate this drug, Congress is still debating on whether or not to vote on this issue. Some may argue that it should be up to the states, but then the federal government could still use the supremacy clause to prosecute those who use marijuana, even in states where it is "legal."

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/us/texas-raising-speed-limit-for-title-of-fastest-in-the-land.html?_r=0

This opinion piece relates to Federalism because the freeways are operated and owned by the states. The federal government sets down guidelines for the states to follow, which also provides funding. This is an example because Texas is raising the speed limit. It isn't the national government raising the speed limit, it is the state government.

This article shows the relationship of state and federal powers. The state is becoming ready to legalize cannabis, while the federal law objects. This is an example of news that relate to Federalism.

This article is about Wisconsin's failed high speed rail. The federal government offered the state money to build a high speed rail. However, Wisconsin decided to turn down the money. This shows federalism because the federal government could not force Wisconsin to build a high speed rail. Also, Since Wisconsin dd not want the rail road it did not receive the federal money.

This current event shows how federalism is the manner in which speed limits are enforced on freeways. Though these roads pass through state land, the speed limit enforced on them is set by the federal government. This is an illustration of federalism as it entails a division of power between the federal government and states.

This author is calling for legalization of marijuana. He says that states would regulate their own programs while the federal government would tax and regulate them. There is a divided power of states controlling where states would sell marijuana and who it's legal to. The federal government would determine the revenue from the marijuana.

This article shows the relationship of the federal government with state governments over the idea of marriage. Because marriage is not defined in the constitution, states, under the 10th amendment, become able to define what "marriage" is. This means that states have the ability to legalize gay marriage if they choose to do so. Illinois is the most recent state I have heard of to make a push to legalize gay marriage as seen in the article.

This is a news article on gay marriage. the constitution does not state a definition for marriage. therefore if states choose to make gay marriage legal they have the right to, without the federal governments involvement.

This opinion piece relates to Federalism because it discusses the relationship between the federal government and the state government. This article discusses the limitations that federal law has on the states regarding gun control. The federal government wants to require background checks for gun purchases, but is not required of a state.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/02/03/181506/us-keeps-building-new-highways.html

Roads are principally owned and built by the states, but the federal government provides guidelines that the states must follow when commissioning the creation of roads and also funding to support their creation. In the case of the article, it is pointing out that there are too many roads and highways being built and not enough state and federal money being put towards repairing the old ones.

This news article relates to Federalism because it discusses the powers of the State and National government over gay marriage. Specifically, it discusses the fact that some same-sex couples in southern states (states in which it is unlikely that gay marriage will be legalized) are seeking change on the national level.

http://reason.com/blog/2013/01/24/obamacare-an-experiment-in-federalism

This is an example of federalism because it shows dual government involvement( both national and state). We learned this is cooperative federalism, but it was thought if the national government passes Obama care that the states will each adopt there own health care plans.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/02/07/federalism-nah-let-dc-pay-for-it.html

In this opinion piece the fight for power between the national and state governments is described. It talks about block grants and how the federal government is attaching strings to its money so that it has more control over the states. It is trying to go back to cooperative federalism -- more federal power.

This is an article regarding same sex marriage. This is an example of federalism because it is a battle of how power is distributed between the states and the federal government. Since same sex marriage is not stated in the constitution, the power belongs to the states because of the Tenth Amendment.

This article displays the controversy in the balance of the federal and state powers and how it relates to the political parties of today. This Utah conservative congressmen is upholding his views of small (republican ideal) government but also working across the isle and moderating his ideas of government. If other representatives like this U.S senator get elected into the halls of congress, government may be able to reach a comfortable point of "just right" size based of compromises of moderate democrats and republicans. The concept of a government just the right size has been the objective of congressmen for decades however, if more and more moderate politicians enter congress, the U.S may actually achieve a government just the right size.

http://articles.latimes.com/2013/feb/15/local/la-me-harborside-20130215

This article is about the closing of a pot shop in Oakland by the federal government. The local government is for keeping the shop open. They believe that it is good for their local economy. The federal is going to close it because they believe they are taking advantage of the rights they were given to dispense it. This is an example of federalism because the two governments have to work together to decide what to do.

This news article is current and shows how federalism can be related to speed limits that are enforced on freeways. This debate shows the separation of power between the federal government and states. The road way might pass through certain states, but that doesn't necessarily mean the states "own" the road way.

http://news.yahoo.com/education-budget-cuts-looming-does-mean-kids-012900017.html

This is an example of Federalism because it is an article about possible education budget cuts and federal funding. President Obama argues that the government needs to give more funding to early education whereas many conservatives argue that the public school system already has too many employees and too much funding going to unneccessary programs.

This has to do with federalism because it has to do with the marble cake view in that the states and the people are cooperating with the federal government talking about how the states have the right to regulate their on commerce or any intimidating controversies on their hands
