Opinion: Are you ready for the 2012 campaign? Who will the nominees be?

As Republicans dither, debating who is and who isn't in the 2012 race for the White House, President Obama and his team are moving swiftly to dive into the business of winning reelection.

No office space has yet been rented. No committee has been formed. No official announcement date has been locked down. But by sometime next month, the president's team is likely to be a functioning, legal entity with a plan.

That should send a message to potential Republican candidates, who have spent the winter trying to convince themselves that they can wait and wait and perhaps wait some more before they get moving. Obama's team believes otherwise. They know what time and effort are required to build a robust organization capable of winning a general election - and how important the work done this year will be.

I am very excited and ready for this 2012 campaign! Personally, Barrack Obama has not been a very effective president. I feel the republicans are going to take the torch in the 2012 election. The republicans need to do all they can to take that spot because we need to get the republicans back in control again. I think Barrack Obama is going to run in this next election but is not going to succeed. It is going to be interesting to see who all runs for the republican side. Iv'e heard talk that Sarah Palin might be a potential runner. it will be interesting to see what the outcome to this election will be. Its gonna be exciting.

Am I ready for the campaign? I don't really have much of a choice. While it feels a bit early yet at this juncture, I will become a curious observer in the near future. I believe the Democrats will select Barack Obama to run again, as it is rare for an incumbent to not win his parties nomination. On the GOP side the decision is quite interesting as to who will run. Old names from the 2008 primaries like Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are definite front runners; however, I cannot see the American populace supporting people now that they were unwilling to support just a short time ago. Sarah Palin is always a candidate, but I cannot see her having much support after her antics. My two top candidates right now for GOP nominee would have to be Newt Gingrich and David Petraeus. The party will likely want change over what has been available in the past, and while both experienced political minds, they have not been on the presidential circuit in the past.

I am not ready for 2012 because 2011 has just begun. I do, however look forward to 2012 because that will be the year Barrack Obama leaves office. He will be the Democratic nominee. I think he now realizes that it is much more difficult to be the president than to campaign for it.

Ralph Nader will the Independent.

Jimmy McMillan will run with the Rent Is Too Damn High party.

These three will all lose to whoever runs as the GOP candidate unless his or her name is Palin or Walker. As long as the nominee sticks to the basics of smaller government and emphasizes Obama's shortcomings, the GOP candidate will win.

I believe that I, personally, am not ready for the 2012 election. However, I do believe that I will be ready once the time comes. Seeing as I will be 18 by 2012, it will be my first opportunity to vote. I think that the Democratic nominee will most likely be Barrack Obama, but the GOP nominee, however, is more difficult to determine as there are many different possibilities. Popular names such as Sarah Palin as well as Mike Huckabee are definite possibilities, but at this point in time, it is too early to determine.

Wow, a presidential election on it's way? I cannot believe it. Time flies. I feel for the Democratic side of things Obama will run again. I expect that Obama wins the Democratic nominee, but his run will soon stop there. I think that Mitt Romney will win the nominee and the presidential election. I think that he will sweep americans off his feet with the way he views politics. It will definatly be interesting.

I can’t say that I’m ready for the 2012 campaign, but luckily, I’m not running. I don’t really have an informed opinion on who the Republican nominee will be, basically because the old candidates (Huckabee, Romney, etc.) seem to have worn out their welcome as possible presidents and no new candidates have really stepped into the spotlight. Anyways, I think it will be irrelevant who the Republican is because of the Barack Obama factor. If he doesn’t make any huge, unpopular mistakes in the near future and manages to run the same smooth political campaign machine that he managed in 2008, he’s got the re-election locked in.
Although I do disagree with Mickey, I think Jimmy McMillan is the only guy out there who can give Mr. Obama a run for his money.

Please Congratulate Blake Kraussel and Jacob Varsos, as they have been selected to represent MHS at the 2011 Badger Boys' State program.

Please also Congratulate Kathryn Sandoval who will be representing MHS at the 2011 Badger Girls' State program.

Please also spell proper nouns with a capital letter (e.g. Republican, Democrat).

It seems a little early for the next presidentioal election, but I'm excited because it will be my first presidential election in which I can vote. I'm assuming Obama will be the democratic nominee seeing how he is the incumbant. No one can be sure who the republican nominee will be yet, but we can look at a few of them to be possible nominees and then maybe the future president. Just remember everybody, it's our job as the people to vote. So let your voice be heard.

AHanna said...

I'll be excited for the 2012 campaign once it's 2012. Right now, the current politics have my attention, not the year-away politics. But looking ahead towards it, I can make some nominee predictions.

Democrats:
Without a doubt, Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee again because A) rarely is an incumbent not the candidate for reelection and B) he has an outstanding campaign team working for him.

Republicans:
Well, the Republican candidate isn't very clear-cut is he/she? I don't see somebody new rising up and taking the reigns of the Republican nomination; it will be one of those "oldie but goodie" Republicans. I don't see Huckabee or Gingrich being the choice. I don't see Sarah Palin being it either.. although I have to admit that would be awesome. Out of who's out there at the moment, I see Mitt Romney being the Republican choice. He was the closest to McCain in the 2008 run, and did in fact have great popularity with Republicans and still does.

And a little side note...
Even though it appears that an "older" Republican will be the nominee, there are 2 Republicans that would be great candidates (perhaps VP's if not president)...
1) Paul Ryan - WI
2) Marco Rubio - FL
They're younger and not unpopular. Just saying, I'd keep an eye on them.

And as Mickey and Kate have mentioned, don't mess with Jimmy McMillan. Dark horse candidate?

nwalters said...

I am ready for the 2012 election. Unlike the many people who think that President Obama will be voted out of office, I do not believe so. As for the GOP nominees that is a tough decision. There is obviously going to be a lot of big names (Romney, Huckabee, or maybe even Mccain) but the seeing as they have not had much success in the past elections I can't really say they have a chance to get the nomination. Maybe some newer names will take a crack at the nomination. For example Buddy Roemer, former Governor of Louisiana or even Herman Cain a businessman from Georgia. Anything that is said in the next couple of weeks is just speculation at this point. The nomination will not be obvious for a while.

jwaltz said...

2012 already? Wow. I think that Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for sure, but as to who will be the Republican nominee, I'm not certain. At this point, with so much chaos within the government, I hope that the Republican nominee will be someone who will be willing to compromise and do what's right for our country, not just win to be in control. This cat and mouse game between the Democrats and Republicans is ridiculous. I want a nominee who is going to make progress, but not just progress--productive and effective progress.

Ecotton said...

I am alway excetied for an election run the heart felt ads, the pointless bickering of two sides, and the stream of media information to pick through. Here is what is going to happen. The Democrats will run Barrack Obama and the Republicans will most likely run a senior republican leader. In my opinion if the republicans want to win they need to run someone as young and as vibrant as President Obama. President Obama came out of seemingly no where for the Democrats, is there a possibility it could happen for the Republicans the same way? I would like to think so. It most likely will not but, its not a bad thought i think.

I am ready for the 2012 campaign because it will be my first chance to vote for a president. I feel it is going to be an extremely competitive race. I'm positive Barack Obama will be seeking reelection as the Democratic nominee, and I think that Mitt Romney is the most likely nominee for the Republicans. The Republicans like to have an experienced nominee, and Romney fits that. He has run for president in the past and I feel he is ready to be the Republican nominee in the general election in 2012.

sscheidt said...

I am very excited for the 2012 as it will be my first opportunity to vote in a presidential election, much like many of my peers who have previously commented. I think it's pretty obvious that Obama will be the Democratic nominee, but I think it's too early to say who the Republican nominee will be. People are throwing a lot of names out there, and I think that most of them seem like valid options. Although I think that voters will be more likely to vote for a Republican with more experience, I agree with AHanna that Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio are very promising young politicians who would make suitable Presidential candidates.
It is difficult to say, however, which party will win the Presidency. Although Obama ran an effective campaign in 2008, his promise of change has failed to have the impact that it was guaranteed to have. Perhaps the American public will remedy this problem by voting in a new president. Or maybe Obama's imminent 2012 campaign will reinvigorate his promises and springboard him into reelection.
Either way, I look forward to both voting in and witnessing the 2012 election. It will be the first of many presidential elections to come that I will be excited to participate in and watch unfold.

JScott said...

I'm not exactly sure what "ready" means in this case, but if it means am I willing to participate in some fashion in the 2012 campaign, then the answer would be no. I dislike that a good half of a president's term is spent thinking about reelection. It takes time and energy that the president cant spare in crutial times. In fact, it seems that presidential campaigns in general are more like popularity contests instead choosing the best person for the job. As people have said before Obama is the more than likely nominee for the Democrats. However, I really have little to go on for the Republican nominee, just what I've read in other's blogs. I just hope Palin isn't given the power of the world's best(ish) country. She reminds me way too much of my creepy aunt. I do however believe that a Republican president would be best for our country in its current state. I do not want democrats' power to cease for those four years though. A good equilibruim between the two with a slight republican advantage would be ideal at the moment.

I am excited for the 2012 campaign. I believe Barrack Obama will be the nominee for the Democrats, and I think Palin, McCain, Huckabee, or Romney will be the GOP nominee. I think Barrack Obama will end up losing the election. I am excited and ready!

JBerlyn said...

Whether I am ready for the 2012 presidential campaigns or not, they are quickly approaching. I am eager to follow them closely because the 2012 election will be the first presidential election I will be able to vote in.
I believe Barack Obama will win the Democrat nominee because he is the incumbent. He will also be able to run a very successful campaign, as he did in 2008.
The Republican nominee is completely up for grabs and the potential nominee is still difficult to predict. Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee will likely run for the nomination again, and will probably be joined by other well known conservatives such as Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin. Other Republicans that are have rumored to be up for the nomination are Rick Santorum and Mitch Daniels. Tea Party favorites such as Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain will probably not have the popular support necessary for the nomination.
I think Hanna's predictions of Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio are interesting but Ryan seems content with his position as Chairman of the Budget Committee because he is able to further his plan to reduce the deficit, and Rubio has just been elected to the Senate. Rubio will probably not run for President during his first term as a U.S. senator. 2012 seems too early for these young republicans.
This will definitely be an interesting race for the Republican nomination.

It seems like the 2012 campaign is coming up too quickly, but Iill be ready to vote when the time comes. I’m not sure who the Republican nominee will be, but it doesn’t matter in my opinion because Barack Obama will be the Democratic candidate. I believe he will be re-elected to presidency as long as he doesn’t do something crazy to lower his presidential approval rating and turn people away.

I am excited for the 2012 campaign because I will be able to vote and it will be interesting to see if Democrats still support Obama then. I think Obama will win the nomination (although he will need to change his campaign slogan) because the incumbent usually does, as Klinka stated. Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee already have their own programs on FOX news so I wouldn't be surprised if both of them decided to not run. I could see Mitt Romney as a potential GOP candidate. I believe Ryan will concentrate on his responsibility of chairman of the budget committee for a few more terms before running for President. Marco Rubio is too inexperienced to run a good campaign; however, I would not be surprised if he was a vice presidential candidate.

I am completely ready for the 2012 campaign. Last presidential election year I used my own time to do campaign calling for President Obama and I hope to do the same again. Some potential Republican canidates would be Sarah Palin or Scott Walker. I would hope to believe that the country would not allow Mrs. Palin to make it that far, but I wouldn't put it past our country. I personally believe Scott Walker should put his name on the presidential ballet if he is able to pass his Budget Repair bill. Reflections of that bill are spreading like wild fire all over the country, and if that bill is passed, that man can do anything. I'd expect to see more Koch products around, though.

Well, I don't feel not ready for this campaign, so that's totally clear. I believe, as many before have said before me, that Obama will be the Democratic nominee as an incumbent, especially with his effective campaigning.

For the Republicans, plenty of names come to mind without many standouts. Included in these are Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, but as Nick pointed out the public may be unwilling to support them. Other possible nominees are Sarah Palin, but I don't see her as a popular candidate (Palin's Alaska was such a commercial success though!), Ryan, and Rubio. However, these young politicians seem to be staking their place in the world of politics now and fermenting future success rather than immediate results, like presidential nominations.

I think that the nominee for Republicans is up in the air right now, and will be much clearer soon.

First of all I do not plan on voting in the 2012 election because we are all going to be dead before the winner gets to take office anyway. The real debate should be whether or not President Barack Obama or whomever wins the election should be able to give the farwell speech to the world.

But if I most...

First of all I believe the Barack will be selected by the Democrats to run for reelection. I do not think there is much debate there. For the Republicans, I am quite confuziled (tis a real word. It means to be "a combination of confused and puzzled, not knowing what the f*** is going on). Huckabee, Palin, and McCain are all possiblities. However, I believe that the Mitt Romney will be the GOP nominee. I think this because he has the experience and ideals that the Republicans want. And that's all I have to say about that.

I always look forward to the presidential race. In 2012 I am almost guarantee Barrack Obama will be the Democratic nominee. For the Republican side it is a little harder to decide right now. We will need more time for the nominees to campaign and learn more about them. Many people feel that Sarah Palin will run but I really don't think she will and if she does she won't be the Republican nominee. I am looking foward to hearing more about other nominees, but it is still a long way from now.

I am personally not ready for the 2012 election. President Obama has barely served half of his term. He will almost certainly get the Democratic nomination. And as of right now, it appears that he will be able to receive a substantial portion of the popular vote. However, I feel that the Republicans will have the advantage for winning the election, as long as they don't nominate Sarah Palin or another polarizing candidate, but it is too early to tell who the Republican nominee will be.

ckruesel said...

I think that President Obama will definitely run for reelection. Personally I don’t think he’ll win but it will be an interesting election to watch; especially when Obama may spend a billion dollars on his campaign. With that said the Republican nominee may have a hard time winning the election. It may be too early to determine who the Republican nominee will be but Romney and Palin may be names to watch.

MAnderson said...

It seems as though President Obama was just running his campaign, but I guess time really has gone by and its ready for nominees and elections. First, I don't think the President Obama has done what he said nor done much to help America out. Most of the time the president who is already in office gets voted in to stay another term. I'm not sure this will happen. As far as who the Republican nominee will be, Im not sure. I agree with kate in saying that Romney or Huckabee have fallen out of the running. So as of now, im not exactly sure who the Republican nominee will be

I believe the Democratic nominee will be Barack Obama, seeing how most incumbents receive the nomination for their party. As for the Republican nominee, I feel it is very hard to tell. We have all the classics like Romney, Huckabee, and maybe even Palin, but I feel they have given the whole "running" thing a try (although I enjoy the SNL skits on Palin immensely). I'd be interested to see a new face in the run in 2012.

KRodenbeck said...

I'm ready to vote in the 2012 election. I don't think Paul Ryan or Marco Rubio will be running for president just yet, so the GOP nominee could be Mike Huckabee. Hopefully President Obama isn't getting ready for the upcoming election as our economy and a balanced budget is a huge concern right now.

I'm not quite sure if I'm prepared for the 2012 campaign. Rumors of Sarah Palin entering the race have me cringing already. I am definitely excited though, seeing as it will be the first presidential election I will eligible to vote for! Surely, it will be an exciting campaign to watch. I believe Barack Obama will take the Democratic nomination. However, I think it is too early to determine who the GOP nominee will be, and I am not informed enough to make a prediction.

Also, just a note:
Barack: the first name of our president.

Barrack: a large building in which many people are lodged.

First off, I am not ready for the 2012 campaign because I still do not know in which state I will need to register to vote. I am very excited considering I will be able to vote! The nominee on the left will be Barack Obama, and the nominee on the right will be the one, the only, Sarah Palin. Yeah, I said it.

The 2012 election has come up swiftly and speedily, and I am certainly unprepared to think too much about it. First and foremost, I want to just get through this year!

The nominees for Democratic office will surely be Obama, as it is almost assumed that the incumbent be back at it again for a second term. But also for the simple fact of saving face-- it might look bad if he didn't.

As far as Republican nominees, my bet is with Mitt Romney. Admittedly however, I can't say I know too much about Gingrich to really consider his weight in the upcoming election, so it will be interesting to see how his position plays out.

I think that at this point, Sarah Palin is more of an iconic celebrity than a legitimate politician, so, although we might see a lot of her in the media, I doubt she will make any headway in the race.

With many possible candidates, and even more days lying yet ahead to be seen, 2012 will definitely be a most interesting campaigning season!

Hopefully we will have a good Republican businessman to lead our country, similarly to what Scott Walker is doing in Wisconsin. Personally I think Paul Ryan should be president, but he said he won't run this election. We need someone who knows how to tell people how things are and begin the process of making citizens be more independent and stop depending on the government for everything in their life.

I am very excited for the 2012 presidential election. Not only will it be the end of Obama's term, but I will FINALLY be able to vote. I believe Barrack will run again but will find no success. I also think the Republicans will try to prepare Palin for a legit campaign.

After reviewing many people's comments I have many speculations. How can poeple say that Barrack Obama has been an ineffective president? The economy is on an upswing. He passed legislation against don't ask don't tell. He signed a nuclear arms agreement. The guy has gotten much more done. He has been effective.

sscheidt said...

I agree with Ryan that I would not be particularly happy to see Palin on the ballot for the presidential race. Palin has capitalized on her TLC insta-fame in the last year or two, and I think she abused the popularity that she gained from the last election. But I think there are a lot of Americans who feel the same way.

In one Quinnipiac University poll, Palin scored lower than 13 other potential 2012 Republican candidates on a "hotness" index that measures the warmth that voters feel toward political figures.

Also, another survey indicates that Charlie Sheen would receive more votes from Independents than Palin.

Whether or not these polls are legitimate (I'm not so sure the second one was conducted by a credible institute), it is a fact that the public opinion of Palin is not improving. At this point, I would be surprised to see her in the 2012 election.

mpavelko said...

I am excited for the 2012 campaign. I believe that Obama will run again for reelection even though he has not reached his potential in which he said he would. I believe that Donald Trump will be a nominee. He has said that if the polls say it he will run, but we will see. He has also said that while his show is running he will not run but I believe he would be a well known candidate that has the oppurtunity to take the country in his grasp. If he decides not to run I agree with the klinkinator and old nominees will run again.

nspoerk said...

First of all, I am very excited for the next election because it gives me the opportunity to be incessantly obnoxious. I fully plan to gloat because my sister's eighteenth birthday is the third week in November of 2012. So close, yet so far away.

Second of all, I love Mickey's analysis of nominations.

Third of all, I am extremely dissapointed in Obama and his organizations for beginning campaign efforts so soon, regardless of how small those efforts have been as of yet. He was inaugurated two years ago and right now, it seems like we need our President to be worrying about 14.2 trillion problems, all of them dollars. Just to name a few.

Fourth of all, let me reconsider. Maybe after all those non-stimulating packages, we need to throw our Government a red herring, even if it's just to allow the nation's debt ticker to catch its breath before it has a seizure. Spending a billion dollars on a campaign looks trivial in comparison.

Fifth of all, let me actually make my predictions. As Mr. Bretzmann pointed out, "Democrats fall in love, republicans fall in line."

With that much time, effort, and money, Obama could win his party's nomination against an incumbent. But he is the incumbent. So all this is just extra credit, icing on the cake. He'll ride the Democratic ticket, hands down.

For the Republicans, I don't know who to expect and I dont think they will either for at least a couple months. It seems as if most of the people in line have already taken a run at the presidency. I believe they would be best off with new blood in terms of presidential races but who also has significant experience in politics. Things to look for would be a more moderate stance (if moderate is even an acceptable label?) from the Republican nominee so as to not shock some voters with the extremely conservative views of some previously mentioned candidates.

As for who will win the final election, I put it at 60-40 odds in favor of the Republican nominee. It all depends on how Obama handles his last two years of this term and what the focus of each campaign is. Obama does have a lot of political baggage to lug into 2012. There was a lot of dissapproval towards him as a result of the poor handling of the national debt and the way Obamacare was forced through in a relatively short period of time. However, I think much of the "retribution" against the then-Democratic majority was taken out in the midterm elections. If the Republican nominees focus on the economy and especially highlight these shortcomings, their job will be significantly easier, especially if Obama attempts to spend even more of raise the debt ceiling.

I personally am excited for the upcoming campaign. It going to be interesting to see how things play out. Of course I am not ready for the election yet. I don't even know who will be running. However i can make some predictions. I think Mitt Romney will most likely win the Republican nomination and President Obama will likely win the Democratic nomination. Even though Obama has had a rough couple of years, I think he will still be a formidable opponent to whoever wins the Republican nomination. I think he might still have the support of the majority of voters especially with quite a few people upset about the anti-union laws that have been going into effect around the country.

I think it is quite early to be able to make valid predictions for 2012, but I guess that's just the nature of politics. I am interested to see what Obama will be able to accomplish in is last half of his term, and if it will be enough to put him in superior standing for the election. He was stellar in 2008 when it came to raising campaign funds, and I don't expect that to change over the course of the next year.
On the Republican side, I personally feel Mitt Romney is one of the strongest candidates at this time, but a lot could change over the course of the next few months, before campaigning hits full swing. I hope Obama's campaign trail does not detract too much from accomplishing his legislative goals in the next year and a half, or his general approval as a president could further plummet.

As the 2012 campaign looms nearer, I have two people I think could run for President. Earlier, I would have said that the Republican nominee would be Mitt Romney, but now I think it will either be Rick Perry or Herman Cain. Perry leads the polls and I think that many people agree with the ideas that he has. Cain also has some very good ideas, and he has a unique advantage the other Republican nominees don't have because he is African American and the Barack Obama campaign will not be able to pull the race card in the 2012 election.

I am anticipating the upcoming campaign because I will have the chance to take part in the presidential elections for the first time ever and therefore I will have to pay attention to the different candidates very closely. I feel that Mitt Romney will be the Republican nominee because he has the most organization supporting him because of the fact that he has been planning his campaign for 3 years. He has support from all states due to his years of planning which gives him money in order to run his campaign. He will be able to advertise throughout all of the states due to money that he has and will continue to receive. Romney also has the support of the Republican establishment in washington because they agree with his views. The Republican establishment thinks that he has the best chance of beating President Obama. I think that President Obama will win for the Democratic party because he is the current president which gives him a huge advantage above the other candidates. President Obama also has a large amount of money through fundraising he has done to campaign for the 2012 elections. President Obama also does not have a very strong challenger who will win the satisfaction of the people more than President Obama. I think it will be a very interesting election and campaign and I am looking forward to it very much.
