This blog is a place for us to give our Analysis and Opinions on important topics related to civics, government and politics.
Analysis is a clinical interpretation of items, issues, ideas, or events and an explanation of their impact on the future (i.e. something you think is going to happen).
Opinion is composed of your reactions, feelings, and beliefs on items, issues, ideas or events (i.e. something you would like to happen). Even though they are your opinions, they should be based in fact.

What are your predictions for gun control legislation?
I predict that there will some new gun control laws in the wake of Newtown. My guess is that the law will seem intimating but have several loopholes that will allow dealers to get around the law. Although I predict that background checks will be required (as they are in Oregon and few other states)
I predict that there will be a lot of talk about how to "control" guns but little to nothing will happen because there is too many different opinions (even between same party members) on what should be done that nothing will get passed.
I think with in the last few incidents, gun control legislation will be a topic of discussion. After the Colorado theater, Sikh Temple, Newtown, and many other individual cases all over the nation, states will take the matter into their own hands. I believe the issue will be discussed on a state level than a federal level.
I believe that there will be many attempts to push through legislation concerning gun control, but I do not believe it will be able to grab hold. Conflicting opinions on how it should be and can be done will prevent anything from happening. As beneficial as it would be for it to be discussed and actually have movement on the subject, it will probably be discussed more in each state separately.
Although there already exists reasonable gun control legislation throughout the country, the events that have occurred this past year have made it a topic of discussion. I think eventually this will become a national decision and will hopefully help gun control.
I think there will be little action taken on the gun controll problem mostly because there are too many people who believe in both sides of the argument. With so many opinions i think there will just be alot of talk but little to non action taken.
I do not think any changes will be made to the gun control laws in the near future. Despite the recent tragedies involving this legislation, I don't think any groups will effectively pursue an effort to change these laws. Many Americans will continue to argue that the Constitution supports this type of gun ownership, and other Americans will argue that more intense gun control will help to prevent more shootings from occuring in the future. Discussion will occur, but no action will be taken.
I don't think anything will be changed to gun legislation in the near future due to a few reasons. There is a split Congress -- a Republican House and a Democratic Senate. If one chamber passes a gun control law, I believe the other chamber would not pass it. Also, supporters of the current gun laws have the 2nd amendment on their side, and the anti-gun groups have the elastic clause on their side (they could make their case saying that a change is necessary for the country). If something is done soon, I think it would be altering the concealed carry law but not abolishing it.
I predict that there will be alot of talk about gun control legislation because there are so many options, and many people who will believe on both sides of the argument. It would be nice if there was alot of action taken on this subject, but I don't think much action will be taken, just alot of talk about it.
no matter how many laws they make, people will still have their guns or find ways to get them, but laws requiring stricter background checks will probably be set in place
In light of the recent shootings gun control will most definately be debated in the halls of congress. However, debate is very different than the laws passsed. I believe the laws restricting guns will be limited especially because of the NRA and the vast number of gun owners in the U.S. The only influence more powerful than the NRA is the american people and at this moment the american people do want legislation. In the end, I believe congress will pass few light laws restricting guns such as better background checks and gun safety courses but nothing darastic such as amending the second amendment.
I believe that there will be a large push for reform of the current gun control laws because of last year's events, but that no large decision will come of it. This is because our country is greatly divided on how to handle the gun control laws. The many opinions along with the second amendment will result in no major changes the the law.
Even though there is a lot of discussion about gun control laws, I predict that it will be a while before any laws are acutally passed. Last years unfortunate events sparked conversion on both sides, but with very different viewpoints, it will be difficult to agree on laws that will get passed.
I believe that nothing will happen due to the varying opinions about gun control. A few stricter laws to obtain guns may be put in place, but that will be it.
I'm sure that because of the tragedy in Connecticut the gun control laws will be a big concern and thing to talk about. I think that there will be new ideas on how to control who gets guns like implementing background checks, but because there are many different opinions on gun control it will be controversial.
I predict that the government will try to make a new law on gun control because of all the incidents and expecially Newtown. Also the Newtown incident makes me wonder if teachers will be able to carry a gun to protect themselves and others if a shooting were to happen.
I predict that the government will pass new gun control laws in the wake of recent events. I think the laws will contain extensive background checks and longer waiting peroids. Also stronger reulations on assult rifle type weapons and extended clips.
I predict that there will be a lot of talk about gun control laws due to recent events in the past few months and the desicions will be made at a state level, not a federal level.
I believe that new legislation witian not be passed at the federal level because of second amendment rights but at the state levelthere will be legislation for limiting assult rifles to only those who own gun business where it is part of their business. but limiting legal guns isn't the big problem because people that obtain legal guns tend to be law abiding citizens. the big problem is illegley obtained firearms and that legislation should be passed to crack down on illegal firearms.
I believe that due to the past shootings, gun control will become a very talked about topic. We have seen commericals with celebrities and social networking sites, start to question this law. Most would like to see change but I do not think any change will be coming soon. There is too many opinions and views on this topic,a compromise doesnt seem possible any time soon.
I think there will be a lot of debate on what to do, and how to "control" guns. Although, I dont think anything will be done due to the difference in opinion among the parties. Hopefully they do figure something out though.
I believe that there will be a law banning automatic weapons in order to control guns. I don't think that the government will ban handguns though. With all the shootings lately people may feel that something will have to change. There are many arguments in favor and against gun control and how the second amendment of the constitution should be viewed; however, I feel banning automatic weapons and not handguns may be a "happy medium" for everyone.
I believe that there will be stricter laws put in place for automatic weapons and large capacity magazines, but there will no ban on any weapons. This is because there are too many people that support gun rights and want to ban automatic weapons.
I don't believe that there will be little new legislation on gun control. Even in the wake of serious tragedies involving assault weapons, there are too many different opinions on the constitutionality of any kind of gun control and gun control's effectiveness. For example, while there was outcry for legislators to revisit gun control, the NRA issued a statement that only increased gun possession could prevent more gun-related tragedy. The difference of opinion between the anti-gun activists and pro-gun activists seems too big for any compromise. Also, pro-gun interest groups, especially the NRA, contribute much money and have too much political sway to give gun control legislation much of an opportunity.
I believe that the debate about gun control will be brought up again due to the recent shooting, but that nothing will change. There are still the same arguements: is it people or guns that kill people? The obvious answer is people, but then there are accidents and the fact that people would not be able to hurt others if guns weren't around. Then again, how can we completely eliiminate improper gun use? Thus I think that the gun laws will stay the same until one side comes up with a better argument.
I think that although the event that happened was terrible little will change. Many bad things with guns have happened and little to nothing has changed. I think the one thing that could possibly be changed would be adding a limit to the amount of ammo a magazine can hold.
I liked Olyvia's comment because it was logical and referenced a recent event. She also gave reasons as to why any change to gun control legislation will be controversial.
I really like Bethany's comment. She described, explained, and gave an example. She also introduced some outside information that I didn't know about. Great ideas!

I predicted that little was going to be done about gun control and I believe I was right. Gun control was always a heated topic but now that the Newtown tragedy has died down the debate will be less heated causing little to no change in gun control.

I think that any new gun control legislation that is passed will be motivated by a panic and a percieved need to crack down even further on people who lawfully own guns. when mass shootings happen people look for ways to get the guns off the street as fast a possible, and by any means necessary. what we need are actions based on the facts, did the crimminal have a record, did he have mental health problems etc., and then we should focus on addressing the societal problems that are often the cause of the act in the first place, not taking all the guns away from the people who can't get them ilegally like the everyday people in america just because everyone is scared for a little while and politiccians feel the need to do "something instead of nothing even if that something is not a good idea".
Gun control is still a very heated debate. Most of the debate comes from the real meaning of the second amendment which, since the creators of the constitution are all dead, is completely based on interpretation. I think with the increase in tension over terrorism and self-protection since 9/11, the American people would fight very hard to keep their guns and save their rights to own and have them. I think within the next five years legislation will be made to limit all gun purchases to handguns and shotguns, for hunting and self-protection purposes. With the amount of killings in the country scaring its citizens, i.e the batman killer, people are very scared about letting others have guns. The voice of the majority will reign supreme.
With all of the mass shootings in the past year, I believe gun control is going to be debated more than it has been since 9/11. I predict that stricter rules will be followed when it comes to selling a gun and even stricter rules will be put into place involving the type of guns people can buy. I believe that very extensive background checks of the person buying the gun will be needed to effectively stop anyone from a troubled past from using a gun for the wrong purposes. I doubt I am the only one with these opinions so I really think there is a good chance stricter all around rules will be a big debate in the upcoming months.

Gun control legislation will pass, but not in as strong of a way as what is proposed on Illinois. Perhaps just bans on automatic weapons?
