This blog is a place for us to give our Analysis and Opinions on important topics related to civics, government and politics.
Analysis is a clinical interpretation of items, issues, ideas, or events and an explanation of their impact on the future (i.e. something you think is going to happen).
Opinion is composed of your reactions, feelings, and beliefs on items, issues, ideas or events (i.e. something you would like to happen). Even though they are your opinions, they should be based in fact.
I'm sick of talking about health care. Obama has been trying for months to reform health care and is making no headway. This health summit is just another example of his progress. Although both Democrats and Republicans agree health care needs to be changed, they can find no common ground. Obviously they do not think it is a drastically important topic, otherwise they would have come to some agreement already.
I am a fan of the legit/not legit section, it's incredibly useless and not really news at all.
Anyway, health care. It's been brought up, then brought up again, then beaten, then debated, and we still don't have anything done. The source was very helpful in explaining that healthcare costs money, who knew? But it failed to really explain how bad Obama needs the health care system to be reformed.
The shoutout is still my favorite portion of the student news...though I mistakenly thought Curling consisted of Triple Doubles and whatnot. By the way, congrats to the Canadians for winning gold. I don't know who won the women's tournament--sorry.
If people really are "getting sick" of talking about healthcare reform, then the Republicans are winning. But this mentality is what is diminishing the government's ability to revampt the system. Healthcare, as President Obama says, shouldn't be a debate in which one has to "choose a side" and campaign for (universal vs. current, for example). Everyone knows the current system sucks. I have heard President Obama say he wants a bipartisan agreement, but every time the Republicans have a genuine suggestion, he claims they are "being difficult." If we "get sick" of the issue of healthcare reform, we'll all end up like little French children from the 19th Century who fought in the French Revolution.
And while we're in the vicinity of the topic, I would pay to see Carl Azuz sing "I Dreamed a Dream."
well i actually watched the video this time. it brought back great memories.
screw health care let's talk about whales.
It is a shame that the trainer was killed. HOWEVER!! animals belong in their natural habitat (including humans). and obviously the trainer knew what he was getting into when he got the job. seeing animals in captivity makes me sad. we should work on preserving our planet's wildlife instead of making a spectacle of it; to live along side nature and not have to visit a man made facility to experience it.
Student news is almost as big of a joke as regular local news. I really dont care about seatbelts and ice mazes. I do care about health care, however. I completely agree that was just a PR stunt as one republican said. Once again I love to listen to Obama tell me that he wants to reach an agreement. Of course you want an agreement, everyone does....but guess what else everyone wants? Some kind of progress.
P.S. Mr. Bretzmann, "bring him home" was dedicated to you today....you're welcome.
HIs whole bit on "It was worth a try" doesn't really seem to cut it anymore. Granted, it will be difficult to get Democrats and Republicans to reach a compromise, but that's their job: to make things happen and make improvements, despite their differences. Also, the whale thing is horrible, but what did they expect when the tried to make a killer whale become civilized? That had very little potential from the start. The only reason they're actually keeping him contained is because they need a male so they'll always have whales to show off. The (fairly) recent establishment of laws prohibiting the capturing of whales really put a damper on the future of SeaWorld!
Mr. Bretzmann: woo! French isn't so bad after all! :)
The Health care talk needs to stop. I agree with Andy. Lets talk about the whales. the trainer should never have gotten into the pool. there not called killer whales for nothing. Back to the blog. The health care reform policy again has a very little light at the end of the tunnel. they all need to start over kill the bill and make a new one.
No progress at all is not a compromise. There is no use in the Democrats conceding to a reform that really isn't much of a reformation and if nothing is done then the Republicans "win." Of course it is wise that substantial time be put into making such a drastic change on the industry, but too much time spent is only inciting frustration. As for the whale incident, it is extremely unfortunate that the trainer had to die working at something she loved. As tragic as it was, hopefully something positive, a greater understanding for human and marine life interactions, can result from it.
And of course Democrats say they want President Obama to succeed, but then sneak in that they want to "change the direction" he's going in. I love it. A subtle way of telling the president his way of doing things aren't the right way ! ( no pun intended ). All these attempts at bipartisanship are failing and i'd just like to see something get done. It's starting to get ridiculous, yet its starting to show how much Obama really can (or can't) do. Obama should rethink things and go to sea world to watch a show.
it feels like a crazy continuum with the whole health care thing. They've been talking about it forever and we are in the same positon essentially as we were when Obama first brought the topic up and it's getting kind of irritating to hear any more about it. But the video wasn't that bad to sit through i guess since it's Carl Azuz.
I think that the Republicans should stop being inside the insurance company's pocket. Vote for the robust public option. They're valuing politics and not wanting Obama to get anything done over American lives. This shouldn't be tolerated in my opinion but evidently I speak for myself. The bill lowers the deficit over time, saves lives, and saves money. It even does most of what Republicans mostly want to do and they still don't vote for it.
unless some actual progress is made in the healthcare bill it should stop being talked about.. it gets rather annoying that everytime its brought up that its always something about how nothing has changed
So the summit was going to be a meeting to find common ground on the health care reform, but even Obama said that it didn't seem like the "gaps could be bridged" between the Republicans and the Democrats. It just doesn't seem like this bipartisanship is going to work. Also I don't understand why people were still allowed to work with that whale after he had been linked to two previous deaths...
Well, once again the french suck even though I went through the whole musical. Anyway, this has been a failure for anybody. Pass a bill. Pass something. Meet some middle ground. As much as this is the republicans fault for not voting, is the democrats for not wanting to compromise. Paprocki, maybe a public option will come some day. Not this year or the even the next ten. The mass people don't want one. We can all agree that insurance companies are tterrible and need change. Get rid of pre-existing condition and all those other clauses. Every single american should receive health insurance if they work for it and right now, that is not happening.
There has been so much talk about health care in the past several months, and still no progress has been made. Its getting somewhat pathetic. Something needs to give

Carl Azuz is a small pup, and if you kick him you'll be sorry when he grows up!
The MHS production was tres great! (Yes, that's how good it was...it made ME want to speak French).

Rachel: agreed.
