Analysis: Do you think the federal government will be shut down (similar to 1995), or will a deal be reached?

(And by the way, will you be there after school Tuesday to practice answering APGOPO questions?)

I believe there will be a deal reached. The democrats disagreed with it until they realized that it would cut 4 billion dollars. If that was there main decision then there will be a deal met soon. We will see though when it passes to the senate however. I do believe though that they will reach an agreement for both sides.

Christian thinks that a deal will be reached Aka we will win and the bill will be passed as is. It would be interesting if the government shuts down though. Sounds like it would be exciting.

This is definitely an interesting situation. In my opinion, eventually there will be an agreement between the two parties. However, it may be quite some time before an actual "deal" is made.

I think a deal will be reached. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of controversy over this bill, especially since the Democrats realize some of the cuts are in agreement with Obama's fiscal policy. Since money is the only issue, a deal or compromise could be ironed out, though it will most likely pass as is due to the lomming deadline.

It is difficult to say whether or not there will be a government shutdown admidst the budget debate going on in Washington. Democrats are strongly opposed to the House Republicans' budget cut proposal, however they seem to agree on short-term cuts. These short-terms cuts could prevent a shutdown, or could just prolong its happening. Short-term cuts won't solve spending problems; cuts for the long run will. The Republicans approve of drastic cuts, but the Democrats don't seem so willing to agree. Therefore, it will be interesting to see whether or not a shutdown will happen. And if one does happen, when will it?

I believe an agreement will be reached. Since there are portions the democrats agree with, I think they will reach an agreement. Although I too think it'd be interesting for the government to shut down.

I would like to think that some sort of a deal would be reached. Shouldn't communication and compromise be something that the US government prides itself on? The idea that the government would shut down is a little disheartening, considering that as professional adults, some sort of middle ground couldn't be forged. I have faith that some type of deal will be reached, but nonetheless, if it did shutdown, it would make for some interesting politics to come in the following months.

I believe there will be a government shutdown. Tensions are rising between the Republicans and Democrats at the Capital and I believe the only reason the two parties have made short-term "agreements" is because they fear the term "federal shutdown." There is two little time left, just over 100 hours, for the budget cuts to be passed through the Republican powered House and then be passed through Democratic Senate because I do not believe the Democrats in the Senate are going to be bullied around into passing the spending bills. I think the budget cuts are going to be going back and forth between the House and the Senate, trying to form a compromise, but in the end they will run out of time. The only way I believe there won't be a shut down is if the phrase "shutdown" scares the Democrats and Republicans into forcing short-term compromises.

Unfortunately, I will not be attending the APGOPO practice questions after school on tuesday because I have a doctors appointment. I know it's disappointing but what has to be done must be done.

I couldn't imagine the federal government being shut down, so I think that a deal will be reached. I'm assuming that the deal won't really include much since I think the bill will eventually get passed. I could be wrong though, maybe the government will shut down, what would happen then?

I definitely doubt that there will be a shutdown on Friday, as it seems that, even if worst comes to worst, a short-term agreement could come to pass in the wake of this potential stoppage. I don't believe that a long term solution to this problem will be reached immediately - thus, democracy in effect - but I think there will be enough of a bipartisan coalition to simply pass a short-term measure. There seems to be enough support on both sides in the attempt to stop this shutdown, so I believe that major problems will be averted (or delayed) for the time being.

I highly doubt that the government will be shut down. I think a deal will be made, either short term or long term. In almost every situation there is a agrement met between the two parties, but most of the time one party is not to happy about it. If it does shut down I will be very interested to see how things play out. I hope a deal can be rached shortly and the problems will be fixed.

I believe a deal will be reached as well, just not to the extent Republicans want. Like Christian said, if the government did shut down, it would be sorta interesting.. and childish.

I do not believe the government will be shut down. I believe both the Democrats and Republicans want to reach compromise and will achieve this. The fact that Democrats changed their minds about a funding measure when they discovered President Obama is eliminating four billion dollars from certain programs shows that the Democrats may reach compromise with the Republicans.

I believe that the government will not be shut down. The Democrats and the Republicans both appear to agree on the short term (two-week fix) that the Republicans proposed. I think that this will give them enough time to try and compromise on some of the long-term budget. In my opinion, this must truly be a bipartisian effort if they are to avoid shutting down the government.

I would really enjoy finding out what would happen if government was to shut down. Unfortunately, I do not believe that will happen. I believe a deal will be made before the deadline. The bill will pass with minor changes to it to please the democrats

MAnderson said...

I don't think it is ever going to be possible for the federal government to shut down, because its taken a long time to establish it. I think that Democrats and Republicans will reach an agreement temporarily but will continue to fight the battle until the real deal is made

DWayer said...

I am certain a deal will be reached, as it would be way too detrimental to the country to have the federal government shut down for any period of time. The compromise will come in one form or another, being either short term or long term, to avoid a shut down at all costs.

The fall of our federal government will be followed by the evolutionary regression of mankind. During this crucial time, man and beasts of the field will learn to coexist in carnivorous harmony. The shock of anarchy will render the human populace speechless, literally. Remnant coos and grunts will replace our old, civilized language. Yes, texting your homies will be harder. Stores and banks and post offices and hot dog stands will all meet their unfortunate end. Yes, your coupons will not be valid anymore. Quadrupedalism will replace bipedalism, because it does not take a rocket surgeon to see that four feet are better than two. Yes, you will have to wear four shoes now. More is always better. Always. Our teeth will grow to prodigious size to ensure we can pierce the thick hides of buffalo and mammoth. Yes, mammoths are back. Four out of five dentists agree that Colgate toothpaste will not exist if we lose our federal government. Yes, your teeth will rot. There is irrefutable evidence backing up these claims. I hope we don't lose our federal government. I like hot dogs.

It's Sunday, and I'm bored. Don't judge me.

Well, I don't feel not ready for this campaign, so that's totally clear. I believe, as many before have said before me, that Obama will be the Democratic nominee as an incumbent, especially with his effective campaigning.

For the Republicans, plenty of names come to mind without many standouts. Included in these are Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, but as Nick pointed out the public may be unwilling to support them. Other possible nominees are Sarah Palin, but I don't see her as a popular candidate (Palin's Alaska was such a commercial success though!), Ryan, and Rubio. However, these young politicians seem to be staking their place in the world of politics now and fermenting future success rather than immediate results, like presidential nominations.

I think that the nominee for Republicans is up in the air right now, and will be much clearer soon.

I agree with Robert, a deal will not be reached and the federal government will be shut down.

"You can accept the fact that this city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave!"

"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!"

The Ghostbusters were right.

I hope a deal is reached because the cuts are neccessary.

MKonicke said...

I agree with Mickey and Robert. I don't believe a deal will be reached. Bipartisanship will shut down things because it is just overall a very negative thing for society. They are very far apart on the fiscal matters.

The federal government will not shut down like it did in 1995 because the democrats will not allow it to happen. A compromise will happen in the next few weeks that will prevent the government from shutting down. Personally, the government would be in a far worse shape if it shut down in this political climate. There are too many issues that need the attention of the federal government. If the government does shut down I would assume that our country's problems will only increase and nothing will be solved. Hopefully the legislatures will find a way to compromise before they are forced to shut down the government.

Well here's a post I haven't posted on. I don't think the government will completely shut down, and if it does, I will lose all faith in humanity. Both sides need to own up and figure things out together or we will be unable to progress as a state or as a country in the future. I feel that recent world events (a 9.0 scale earthquake in Japan seems to be a a slightly more pressing matter than collective bargaining) should really put things into perspective and push our government to make a deal.

GLeGros said...

As I'm sure everybody already knows, the threat of a possible government shutdown due to discrepancies in the new budget bill has passed. The fact that an agreement was made in the last minute and the government wasn't shut down was in the best interest of our country as a whole. There are greater issues that need to be looked at, and I think it was good that no more time was wasted on this disagreement.

After seeing the comments to this post, I think that it is remarkable a deal was reached. Obama did what Republicans wanted. Budger cuts were made. Republicans need to quit complaining now. Everyone should be happy with this deal for the most part.

JakobL said...

I think the deal will be reached because even a Democrat said that the GOP plan is 'acceptable'. That means that they have to make deal or the government will be shut down, which wouldn't be good for all parties. The GOP can now make a lot of pressure because if the deal won't be reached the Democrats lose of their credibility.
